Starting a dietitian private practice in Illinois

Illinois licenses dietitian nutritionists (LDN) under the Dietitian Nutritionist Practice Act, administered by IDFPR. Illinois's breach law covers medical and health-insurance information, and the flat 4.95% individual income tax keeps rate math simple.

Credential: Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN), via IDFPR

Official source: Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation — Dietitian Nutritionist

Credential and scope

  • Use “LDN” only with an active IDFPR license. IDFPR publishes the requirements, renewal and continuing-education rules, and a public license lookup.
  • Show your LDN number with your NPI on superbills.

Privacy: PIPA and BIPA

  • The Personal Information Protection Act (815 ILCS 530) treats medical information and health insurance information as personal information, so a breach involving them triggers Illinois notice duties.
  • The Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14) excludes information captured from a patient in a health care setting or collected for treatment, payment or operations under HIPAA. If you use face, voice or fingerprint tools outside that context (for example, marketing or staff time clocks), review BIPA first.

Business and tax

  • Illinois taxes individual income at a flat 4.95% (Illinois Department of Revenue), so add it to federal and self-employment tax in your rate calculation.

Every state

Federal rules apply in every state too: the No Surprises Act generally requires a Good Faith Estimate for uninsured or self-pay clients, and HIPAA applies if you transmit health information electronically in connection with standard transactions such as insurance billing. Also check whether your state has joined the Dietitian Licensure Compact before seeing clients across state lines.
